Collection: Fibreglass Matting & Tapes

Choosing the right fibreglass matting and fibreglass tape is what determines whether a GRP roof lasts twenty years or starts weeping at the first hard frost. This range covers everything you need to reinforce a fibreglass laminate: chopped strand mat (CSM) in 225g, 450g and 600g weights for the main structural layer, 30gsm surface tissue for a smooth, pin-hole-free finish under your topcoat, and fibreglass tape for reinforcing joints, trims and edge details.

As a rough guide, 450g CSM is the standard choice for most flat roofs with light to moderate foot traffic, 600g CSM suits high-traffic areas, larger roofs or where extra durability is required, and the lighter 225g mat is best for small repairs and patch jobs. Not sure which weight you need? Check the FAQs below, use our GRP Kit Calculator, or call our team on 0800 612 7903 before you order — getting the correct matting weight right the first time saves you a second delivery.

Remember that matting and tape are only the reinforcement layer. You'll also need GRP roofing resin to wet it out and a topcoat to finish and UV-protect the surface — or start with a complete GRP roofing kit if you're covering a full roof from scratch.

Collection FAQ's

Fibreglass matting is used to reinforce GRP roofing systems, flat roof repairs, laminating work, trims, joints and other fibreglass applications. When combined with GRP roofing resin, it creates a strong and durable reinforced laminate.

Chopped strand matting, also known as CSM, is made from randomly distributed glass fibres. It is designed to absorb resin and form a strong reinforced fibreglass layer for GRP roofing, repairs, moulding and laminating work.

The number refers to the weight of the glass fibre in grams per square metre, also known as gsm. A heavier mat creates a thicker and stronger laminate but also needs more resin to wet out fully. 225g chopped strand mat is suitable for small repairs and patch jobs, 450g chopped strand mat is the standard choice for most domestic GRP flat roofs, and 600g chopped strand mat is best for larger roofs, high-traffic areas or projects where extra durability is needed.

Yes. Fibreglass matting is one of the key materials used in GRP flat roofing systems. It is applied with catalysed roofing resin to create a reinforced waterproof layer before the topcoat is applied.

Fibreglass tape, also known as bandage tape, is used for local reinforcement rather than covering a full roof area. It is commonly used on joints, seams, trim edges, corners, upstands, cracks and smaller repair areas before the main laminate is applied.

Fibreglass matting is normally used to cover larger roof or laminate areas, while fibreglass tape is used for narrower reinforcement areas such as joints, seams, edges, trims, corners and repair details.

As a rough guide, allow around 1.5–2 litres of resin per m² for 450g chopped strand mat, and around 2–2.5 litres per m² for 600g chopped strand mat. It is best to add an extra 10–15% for overlaps, corners, trims and wastage. Exact usage can vary depending on resin type, temperature and application method. For a more detailed breakdown, read our guide on how to estimate materials for a fibreglass flat roof.

Surface tissue is a thin finishing layer applied over the final layer of chopped strand mat while the resin is still wet. It helps hide the fibre pattern, reduce pinholes and create a smoother surface for the topcoat. It is not a structural layer, but it improves the final finish.

Fibreglass matting and tape should be kept dry, clean and stored indoors, either flat or rolled. Avoid moisture and damp areas, because wet fibreglass matting may not wet out properly with resin and can weaken the finished laminate.
